Distance Learning Training Compensation for Faculty

 

Basic Blackboard 9Online

To succeed in this online course,
participants should be able to touch-type; use a mouse; enter text in a text editor or in Web-based forms; copy and paste text; save, locate, and open files on a computer; use drop-down lists; enter URL's; browse the Web; access Wake Tech e-mail.

For the training, participants will need a key account username and password for Blackboard and for the College's GroupWise e-mail system.

Using PowerPoint with BlackboardMain Campus

Learn how to use PowerPoint presentations effectively with Blackboard. Bring a short PowerPoint presentation to add to your online class. Using multimedia in PowerPoint will be discussed.

Prerequisite: Basic Blackboard training or experience. Familiarity with PowerPoint.

Quality E-Learning Practices Main Campus Hybrid Course

Learn how to use Quality Matters course standards to create an effective online or hybrid course. Course is limited to 6 instructors who will edit their own inactive online or hybrid course during this semester-long online class. QEP Certification awarded to courses that successfully meet QEP standards.

Prerequisite: Introduction to QEP workshop and Blackboard training or experience. Preference will be given to faculty who have also completed PowerPoint, Camtasia, and Pinnacle training.

Distance Learning Training Compensation Policy

Eligibility

  • Full-time and adjunct faculty who have not taught an online or hybrid* course and who have not previously completed training are eligible for training compensation.
    *Hybrid course is defined as delivering a minimum of 50% of course content online, 50% on campus.
  • Faculty who have taught an online or hybrid course or who have completed training prior to March 2006 are not eligible for Basic Blackboard training compensation.

Requirements

  • To receive training compensation, you MUST submit the required form, Faculty Request for Distance Education Training Compensation, which is available in the Training section of the Blackboard Forum (in your Blackboard account).
  • Trainees must be computer literate. (file management, e-mail, cut/paste, browse web)
  • To request compensation for training, submit an application form with the required signatures to the Distance Education Support Department before training begins.
  • To receive compensation, training must be successfully completed on schedule. For Basic Blackboard training, compensation will be processed when the first online or hybrid course is taught, not when training is completed. Compensation for advanced training (PowerPoint, Camtasia, Pinnacle, Quality E-learning Practices, or Discipline-Specific) will be paid at the end of the semester in which training is completed.
  • Training must be repeated in its entirety if it is not completed on schedule.

NOTE : Exceptions to the training compensation policy must be approved by the Dean of Academic Support Services and the Vice President of Curriculum Education Services.

One-Time-Only Course Load Reduction N/A

Requirements:

  1. Obtain certification in Basic Blackboard, PowerPoint, and Camtasia training.

  2. Teach an online or hybrid course in the next term.

Limitation: Course load reduction available only to full-time faculty who have not taught an online or hybrid course.

Basic Blackboard $600 Online training in Blackboard. Includes additional assignments. Approximate 25-hour time commitment. Certificate issued upon successful completion.

Requirement: Teach an online or hybrid course within two terms of certification.

Limitations:

  1. Training compensation will be processed when the first online or hybrid course is taught, not when training is completed.

  2. Training must be repeated in its entirety if an online or hybrid course is not taught in one of the two semesters following training.
  3. Cannot be combined with a course load reduction.

Using PowerPoint with Blackboard $100 Two-hour workshop held on Main Campus. Certificate issued upon successful completion.

Prerequisite: Blackboard teaching experience and familiarity with PowerPoint.

Requirement: Add PowerPoint content to an online course.

Limitation: Cannot be combined with a course load reduction.

Introduction to Camtasia
Parts 1, 2, & 3
$200 Three 2-hour workshops with an additional assignment held on Main Campus. Use Camtasia software to produce screen demonstrations, video tutorials, and movies of any kind of desktop activity. Certificate issued upon successful completion.

Prerequisite: Blackboard training or experience and PowerPoint training.

Requirement: Add Camtasia content to an online course.

Limitation: Cannot be combined with a course load reduction.

Pinnacle $600 Ten 2-hour workshops with additional assignments held on Main Campus. Create and edit digital video clips for online courses. Approximate 25-hour time commitment. Certificate issued upon successful completion.

Prerequisite: Blackboard, PowerPoint, and Camtasia training.

Requirement: Produce Pinnacle video for an online course.

Limitation: Faculty must teach online for a minimum of 2 semesters prior to Pinnacle training or trainer’s permission.

Podcasting N/A This is a self-paced online course in Blackboard. Explore how podcasting can become an integral part of the learning process for your students.

Prerequisite: Blackboard training or experience.

Quality
E-Learning Practices
$600 Semester-long hybrid course. Edit your own inactive online course according to the 2005-2006 Quality Matters’ rubric, which provides standards for the continuous improvement of online courses regardless of discipline.

Prerequisite: Introduction to QEP workshop AND Blackboard training or experience. Preference will be given to faculty who have also completed PowerPoint, Camtasia, and Pinnacle training.

New Course Compensation $500 Prerequisite: Blackboard training or experience.

Requirements:

  1. Compensation request MUST be for a course that has NEVER been available in online or hybrid format at Wake Tech.
  2. For each new course compensation request, completion of one advanced training course (PowerPoint, Camtasia, Pinnacle, QEP) will be required prior to approval for compensation.
  3. DEADLINE: Submit compensation application within the first 2 weeks that the course is taught.

Limitations:

  1. Compensation is available for only one new course per semester.
  2. Compensation is not available for the first online or hybrid course.
Discipline-Specific Training TBD Department head initiates by submitting a written proposal to the Distance Education Support Department. Rate of compensation determined by hours in training.

Prerequisite: Blackboard training or experience.

Requirement: Teach an online or hybrid course in semester following training.
