Wake Technical Community College: Distance Education

Online Student Comments

Students have the opportunity to anonymously evaluate online courses each semester. Selected comments appear below.

  • Since I work full-time and live an hour away from campus, this online course was the only logical option for me. It made my school experience much less stressful and allowed me more time to concentrate on the material (instead of commuting back and forth). I hope that courses continue to be offered online.

  • Without distance education, it would have been nearly impossible for me to return to school. The Web courses allow me to work at my own pace within reasonable due date restrictions. I probably communicate more with my teacher and fellow students via a Web course than I would in a traditional classroom setting. I have always been a quiet and reserved person, always a little timid to truly participate in traditional class discussions. But through the Web courses, discussions were required as part of my grade as well as attendance and it was much easier for me to feel comfortable typing my discussion points to my fellow students and my teacher.

  • Online courses are the only way to go for me. With a full-time job and a family and house to take care of, I don't have time to travel to and from Wake Tech (which is 25 minutes from work and 45 minutes from home). I would not have been able to take any classes if they weren't online.

  • I am a parent, a husband, and a business owner. The distance education courses at Wake Tech make it possible for me to get an education without changing my schedule. I appreciate the opportunity to take classes from home. The instructors are very helpful and responsive. This is a great program!

  • This online class requires you to be organized, focused, motivated, and to have excellent time-management skills. So, you are taking a lot more out of the class than just learning new material.

  • I was very apprehensive about taking an online course because it has been a while since I’ve been in school. However, the instructor made me feel at ease and provided encouragement throughout the semester. I plan to take more online classes.

  • The best thing about this course is I am hearing impaired, so taking this class provided me with everything, all the information I needed. If I was in class, I would probably miss some things that the professor would have said, and taking this online—nothing was missed.

  • The only problem I see with an online course is that the student must be highly self-motivated, and not everyone can keep up a high level of self-motivation for the entire course.

  • I work full-time and have a family with 2 small children. Without these online classes, I would not be able to further my education.

  • Without the distance courses there is no way I would have been able to return to school to pursue a new degree and career. I feel very confident that I'm learning just as much as I would in the traditional classroom settingmaybe even more because to some degree I am learning the information on my own. However, I know I can go to the instructor whenever I run into a problem, so I'm not left completely on my own. I can work at my own pace within the deadlines, and I don't have to worry about the 1+ hour commute that I would have to endure if I took the traditional classes on campus.

  • Love the interface and convenience of online classes. Anyone who thinks that online classes are easier than traditional classes is crazy. I often get bored and tune out during on-campus classes, but the online courses keep me interested and working at my own pace. I feel that I retain a lot more from my online classes than my "real" classes.

  • The material has been tough, but the instructor has used a variety of projects and assignments to keep it interesting. I’d take another online class any day.
